How Much Fabric Do You Need for a Salwar Suit? Metres Guide | सूट के लिए कितना कपड़ा

Bought an unstitched suit, or picking fabric from a roll? The most common question we get at the counter is: how many metres do I need? Here is our working guide from the tailoring table at Shree Ambika, Bolinj Naka.

A standard 3-piece unstitched suit usually comes as about 2.5 m top, 2.5 m bottom and 2.25 to 2.5 m dupatta. That is enough for a knee-length kurta with salwar, churidar or straight pant for most people.
What changes the number
- Fabric width: wide fabric (54 to 58 inches) needs about 20 to 25% less. Narrow handloom (36 inches) needs about 25% more.
- Length and flare: every extra 4 inches of kurta length adds roughly 0.25 m. Kalis, Anarkali panels and flared palazzos need much more.
- Sleeves: full sleeves add about 0.25 m over half sleeves.
- Prints and borders: big motifs, one-way prints and border placement need extra so the design matches. Keep 0.25 to 0.5 m spare.
- Shrinkage: cotton and handloom (like Maheshwari) can shrink. Wash or dip the fabric before cutting, and add about 5% if you will not.
- Lining: sheer fabric like muslin, chiffon or net needs lining of the same length as the kurta.

42 से 44 इंच चौड़े कपड़े में, 5'4" तक की ऊंचाई के लिए: कुर्ती 2.25 से 2.5 मीटर, सलवार 2.5 मीटर, चूड़ीदार 2.5 से 2.75 मीटर, प्लाज़ो 2.5 से 3 मीटर, पटियाला 3.5 से 4 मीटर, दुपट्टा 2.25 से 2.5 मीटर। लंबी कद या बड़े साइज़ के लिए आधा मीटर ज़्यादा रखें। चौड़ा कपड़ा (54 इंच+) हो तो कम लगेगा, हैंडलूम (36 इंच) हो तो ज़्यादा। कॉटन और माहेश्वरी कपड़ा काटने से पहले धो लें।
